When woodsmoke passes through your combustor the noble metals Palladium and Platinum which are imbedded in the combustor act as a catalyst. A catalyst is a material which reduces the temperature needed for the particles of wood in the smoke to ignite causing them to burn again, which makes the stove burn more efficiently, reducing the amount of pollution your stove emits outside as well as increasing the heat output you feel in your home. A typical combustor will achieve light off at around 500 - 700 Fahrenheit and will normally operate at temperatures of 1200 - 1400 Fahrenheit
While the metals in the combustor do not burn up in the catalytic reaction, the combustor coating does degrade over time due to friction with the wood smoke. After 12,000 hours of burning you will have lost approximately 25% of your combustors catalytic function.
Use original equipment or like original equipment catalytic combustors for replacement in your wood stove.
