Dogs & BBQ

Did you know that a lot of your favorite BBQ staples are harmful to your dogs?

What’s summer without outdoor cooking? But while grilling and Joe-Tissiering provides a relaxing dining experience, it’s good to remember not to be just as relaxed about what food your dogs are being treated to. Barbecue foods can cause your dog a lot of troubles.

From ribs to chips, find out which of your favorite BBQ staples are unfriendly to your dogs.

1. Ribs and other bones -

It is natural to want to give these to your dog. After all, we’ve all heard the saying, “Throw a dog a bone.” But

bones can be dangerous to dogs as dogs could choke or become injured if the bone becomes lodged in their

throat or splinters off. A splintered bone could even puncture the digestive tract.

2. Chicken wings -

Dogs don’t have wings, nor should they eat them. Chicken wings can cause many of the same issues mentioned

above and due to their size, if swallowed whole, they could potentially cause an intestinal obstruction.

3. Hot dogs -

Because our “good boys” aren’t used to the amount of preservatives and salt in this BBQ favorite, they can

cause diarrhea and digestive issues.

4. Corn on the cob –

Corn is not toxic, but the cob has the potential of being a choking hazard or cause digestive obstructions.

5. Onions -

Onions are great on burgers, but they (along with all close members of the onion family) contain compounds

that can harm Fido’s red blood cells if enough are ingested. Although they would need to eat quite a bit to cause

a problem, it’s best not to take the risk.

6. Avocados -

This summertime staple contains a toxic compound called persin. This compound can cause stomach distress in

dogs as well as many other pets.

7. Chips and pretzels -

Who doesn’t love to hear the cute crunch sounds Rover makes when munching on a chip or two? While chips

and pretzels themselves aren’t toxic, the high amounts of sodium can pose a real problem for dogs. Too much

salt can create thirst, excessive urination, and could lead to sodium ion poisoning which could be fatal.

8. Grapes -

No one is quite sure why, but grapes (and raisins) have been linked to the development of kidney failure in dogs.

Some can eat them and be fine, but others eat just a few and become gravely ill. The ASPCA explains that grape

or raisin toxicosis can present as vomiting, lethargy, or diarrhea within 12 hours of ingestion. Dogs become

lethargic and dehydrated, refuse to eat, and may show an increase in urination followed by decreased or no

urination in later stages. Death may occur within three to four days, or long-term kidney disease may persist in

dogs who survive intoxication.

9. Chocolate -

Most of us know that chocolate is toxic to our best buddy, but did you know that even sugar-free chocolate has

potentially fatal compounds? Chocolate poisoning can lead to heart arrhythmias, muscle tremors, and seizures.

Sugar-free chocolate usually contains Xylitol which can lead to a serious drop in blood sugar levels,

disorientation, and seizures within a half hour of ingestion; some dogs may develop liver failure which can be

fatal.

10. Alcoholic beverages -

Most dogs will not shy away from lapping up a good beer; however, dogs are uniquely sensitive to alcoholic

beverages. Just a few ounces of beer or wine can be poisonous to a dog so it’s probably a good idea to keep our

pooches sober this summer!
